“Past Times” by Kerry James Marshall sells for $21.1m to Sean “Diddy” Combs

The extraordinary acrylic and collage on canvas was estimated at around $12 million but shattered the record for living African American artists and sold for $21.1 million (including fees). The piece is 9.5 feet tall and 13 feet wide and was displayed in the Chicago Convention Center for many years.

 

Kerry James Marshall was born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in South Central Los Angeles. He currently lives in Chicago, Illinois. He is well known as a painter, photographer, printmaker, and installation artist.
